NEWCASTLE: 162 kilometres (101 mi) NNE of Sydney, at the mouth of the Hunter River, it is the largest city within the Hunter Region. Famous for its coal, Newcastle is the largest coal exporting harbour in the world. Visit the Memorial Walk – Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, this 450 metre cliff top walkway links Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach or Fort Scratchley – Built in the late 1800s to protect the colony against invasion or Newcastle Museum – For the history of the Hunter Region.
THE HUNTER VALLEY: The area includes numerous wineries, ranging from large multi-national to small family run operations, which makes it a popular tourist destination.Attractions in the Pokolbin area include numerous wineries and Pokolbin village. The Hunter Valley Gardens span over 25 hectares (62 acres) of land in the heart of the Hunter vineyards at the foot of the Brokenback Range, west of Cessnock. Potters Brewery, established in 2002, is the Hunter's first microbrewery located in the heritage listed "Brick Beehive Kilns of Nulkaba". The Great North Walk, a long-distance walking trail between Sydney and Newcastle, has an extension that goes to Pokolbin. Tourist accommodation in the area is plentiful and includes country resorts, golfing resorts, motels and guest houses and hostels. There are many local restaurants where visitors can try local wines.
WILLIAMTOWN: Newcastle Airport and RAAF Base Williamtown are based at Williamtown. Fighter World, a museum dedicated to Australian military fighter aircraft, is located within the grounds of RAAF Base Williamtown. Most of Williamtown is above the Tomago sandbeds (an aquifer that provides water for the lower Hunter Region.
PORT STEPHENS: Port Stephens is a large natural harbour of approximately 134 square kilometres (52 sq mi). It is larger than Sydney Harbour. The port was named by Captain Cook when he passed on 11 May 1770, honouring Sir Philip Stephens, who was Secretary to the Admiralty. Stephens was a personal friend of Cook and had recommended him for command of the voyage. The first ship to enter the port was the Salamander, a ship of the Third Fleet that later gave the suburb of Salamander Bay its name, in 1791. In that same year escaped convicts, then known as 'bolters', discovered coal in the area. Port Stephens is a popular tourism destination with a strong focus on aquatic activities such as whale and dolphin watching, fishing and recreational boating and swimming and oyster farming nearby at Swan Bay.
NELSON BAY: Nelson Bay is located on a bay of the same name on the southern shore of Port Stephens. It is a major tourism centre, particularly for dolphin and whale watching, surfing, diving, fishing and other recreational aquatic activities.
